Jonathan
Haggerty claimed the One
Championship bantamweight muay thai world championship in the
ONE on Prime Video 9 main event.
Haggerty needed less than a round to dismantle and knock out
Nong-O
Hama. The British striker would hurt Nong-O badly in the first
round as a knockdown would put the former champion in danger.
Haggerty took full advantage by rushing his foe, knocking him down
again and then
scoring a vicious knockout that left Nong-O slumped against the
floor. The fight was waved off at 2:40 of the first round.
The co-main event saw Halil Amir
and Maurice
Abevi face off in a battle between two undefeated mixed martial
artists. It was Amir (9-0) that got off to a quick and aggressive
start as he knocked his opponent down several times and went for a
guillotine choke. Abevi (6-1) survived the initial onslaught and
started to find more success on the feet as the fight continued.
However, Amir would get a takedown and finish the fight by taking
the back and attack with a Suloev stretch. After three hard-fought
rounds, the judges awarded a unanimous victory to Amir.
It wasn’t pretty, but Bokang
Masunyane took a clear decision over Koha Minowa
in the card’s second-to-last MMA fight. Masunyane (9-1) would find
success early on by taking down Minowa (13-4), controlling the
action and landing knees. Minowa would take low blows in the first
and second rounds, which slowed the pace. Despite the fouls,
Masunyane was always in control and escaped all of his opponent’s
submission attempts. After 15 minutes, the judges awarded Masuyane
the victory via unanimous decision.
A pivotal muay thai bout saw Saemapetch
Fairtex get upset by Felipe
Lobo. Both men started cautiously, with each finding some
success with leg kicks early on. As the three-round fight
continued, Saemapetch would start landing damaging elbows and heavy
punches. Lobo would get dropped in the second round but would
survive the onslaught. In the third round, Lobo started to hurt
Saemapetch with punches and refused to back up.
The huge flurry was enough to take out Saemapetch and secure a
massive comeback win for Lobo. The fight was stopped at 1:56 of
the third round.
The second and final women’s mixed martial arts fight of the night
saw Denice
Zamboanga get past another test in the form of Julie
Mezabarba. Both women kept the fight standing. It was the speed
advantage of Mezabarba (9-5-1) versus the power punching of
Zamboanga (10-2) that saw both women have their moments. As the
fight went on, Zamboanga would repeatedly land and clearly hurt
Mezabarba. After 15 minutes, the judges gave the fight to Zamboanga
for having the superior striking.
In a mixed martial arts middleweight contest, Isi
Fitikefu showed off his grappling advantage over Valmir
da Silva Barbosa. Fitikefu (8-1) would secure a takedown early
on and control most of the first round by landing damaging ground
and pound. This led to Barbosa (9-3) giving up his neck,
which allowed Fitikefu to lock in a rear-naked choke for a
one-sided victory. The tap came at 4:15 of the first frame.
In women’s strawweight mixed martial arts action, China’s Meng Bo took on
Dayane
de Souza Cardoso. Bo (21-6) immediately was able to damage the
Brazilian by landing her right hand repeatedly. Cardoso (9-2-1)
would try to drag the fight to the feet but couldn’t get her
opponent to the floor. In fact, it was Bo that would take control
of the Brazilian on the floor as the fight progressed. The judges
ultimately awarded a unanimous decision to the Chinese fighter.
The night’s first muay thai contest saw Han Zi Hao take on Asa Ten Pow
in a back-and-forth affair. It was the attack of Hao that set the
pace early and he’d knock Ten Pow down in Round 2. However, Ten Pow
didn’t back down and picked up the pace of his attack. The third
round would see Hao badly hurt by a series of punches, and
the fight stopped by the referee. The stoppage came at 0:52 of
Round 3.
The event began with an MMA fight between Jhanlo Mark
Sangiao and Matias
Farinelli, which was contested at a catchweight after Farinelli
(5-1) missed weight. Sangiao (6-0) stayed undefeated by
locking in a quick kneebar that forced the Argentinean fighter
to tap. The fight was stopped at the 58-second mark of the first
round.
